tHE LIFE TALK FORUM IS A SOLUTION-BASED NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION THAT HAS A “BIRD’S EYE VIEW” OF THE ADOLESCENT WORLD AND HIGHLIGHTS MANY OF THE CURRENT ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FACING TEENS AND PARENTS.

BACK (to top of page)

"As heads of schools we were all very happy to find a service provider working in the area of the alternate curriculum, particularly dealing with the problems faced by children in the age group we deal with every day.  To find an organisation which actively assists both young people and their parents to find solutions to twenty-first century social problems is indeed a bonus. The attraction of the Life Talk Forum is that it tackles contemporary issues in a way that young people both like and understand.  It gives our youth the idea that they own their issues and have a vested interest and an important part to play in the resolution of these issues.  A further advantage is that the forum is not prescriptive about solutions or remedies but allows both adults and learners to resolve their own circumstances in their own way and in their own time. It gets both, children and their parents to sit down and talk about serious issues around parenting and youth responsibility and try to fashion their own answers here.  Its biggest value for me is that it gets children and adults talking at a time when effective communication between parents and their children is not at a satisfactory level.  It gets these parties to engage with issues affecting both."
- Hein Weber, Principal of Khanyisa Education Centre

1.5  Practical parenting tips -  Life Talk’s resident psychologist draws on many real life situations from his practice in order to illustrate points, thus making it easy for parents to relate to and apply in their own lives.

Each talk is between 1 to 1.15 hours and will be structured to deal with the above topics.

2) TALKS AND PROGRAMMES FOR TEENS

TESTIMONIALS: TALKS & PROGRAMMES

"Any parent with children of school-going age would do well to spend an hour or so in the company of Izabella Little-Gates. She shared with expertise, passion and sensitivity of heart on the subject of the dangers faced by 21st Century adolescents. Her presentation held nothing back from parents who sat spellbound as she unwrapped the many layers of risks, threats and real life dramas that all too often, if ignored, serve to take young people hostage while leaving parents feeling frustrated, heartbroken, and helpless. A sobering reality check! Thanks again."
- Richard Stanley, Headmaster, Highbury Preparatory School

"I need to salute you for helping our parents and students, in inviting Izabella all the way from KZN to address them last night.  We sat in the very back row and trust me, judging from the comments that I could lip read/hear, the shock tactics definitely worked for our students! I think that Izabella achieved what she set out to do – create an awareness of all the issues that she addressed – that are an absolute reality. This is certainly a very different era of teenagehood that a lot of us didn’t grow up with – issues that didn’t exist, which makes it a learning curve for parents."
- D, parent

"We got an unprecedented turnout and everyone thought it was an evening to be remembered.  The parents had a lot of questions, and it was apparent through the rapt attention, that adults and teens alike thought the evening was worthwhile and informative.  I want to say that Sue was an angel to work with – competent, efficient and highly organised.  What a pleasure! She went out of her way to make the evening the enormous success it was."
- Carroll Coosner (Psychologist) & Ilona Hermna (Deputy Principal, Vista Nova School)

"A friend of mine went to a talk given by you at her daughter's school. She was completely blown away by what you shared with the parents and the amazing coping tools and advice you gave them. She has been on a mission to get all parents to tap in to the wonderful ways to raise our children in a wholesome way and to give them the mechanisms to grow up normally in a world that has changed so much since we were children.  On her advice I visited your web page and I too was amazed at what you are doing - and enormously grateful for the huge effort you are making to make a difference in other people's lives."
- C. Emberton

"Life Talk has provided detailed reports on the workshops our learners have had with them, which we have used to great advantage to alert us to potential problem areas and ways in which to address these.  Constructive and practical advice is given on how to deal with issues facing these young people and a healthy forum for debate is created in this fashion."
- Hein Weber, Principal, Khanyisa Education Centre

"It was such a pleasure to host you and I am still glowing from all the good things that parents and heads have said to me about the impact you made.  As I said to you, giving a good talk is one thing, but being recognised as a speaker with integrity is quite another.  Sally and Izabella are compelling speakers because one senses their passion about the issues and a desire to make a difference to all young people and families. They come across as speakers who have integrity and who have faced the problems themselves. As a result their responses are full of compassionate understanding for the difficulties that are faced in raising children but are prepared to do something positive about them anyway. They are in the trenches with us and not viewing the battle from a comfy academic distance."
- A. Cook, Headmaster, Mitchell House

BECOME A GALVANIZER SCHOOL

  • Our learners are being confronted by Challengers on many fronts. Without effective tools they feel confused and overwhelmed in their various ‘tugs-of-life’. Others risk losing these contests.

  • Equip educators, learners and parents to identify their Challengers, empower them to harness Galvanizers and inspire them to move towards the future they want to create.

  • Tackle the Challengers that have costly and wide-ranging consequences for our learners, eg: bullying, poor concentration, ill-discipline, peer-pressure, incomplete homework, pregnancy, absenteeism, failing grades, and addiction to technology, risky behaviours and substances.

  • Empower educators who are also affected by Challengers. Save valuable teaching time which is currently being spent on coping with the consequences of these Challengers.

  • The Tug-of-Life Initiative is not another passing fad imposed on an already over-extended school curriculum: it is a call to participate in transforming lives and communities.

How do you benefit?

  1. Access to Life Talk resources (equips learners, educators and counsellors with tools and guidelines that have a direct, positive impact on pupils lives by empowering them to achieve the most out of life).
  2. Enhance your school, learner and parent relationships by promoting conversations about choices and consequences, thereby impacting behaviours and relationships positively.
  3. Enables your educators, parents and learners to use the Life Talk Forum to share ideas.
  4. Special educator access to additional tools to be used when dealing with learners facing Challengers.
  5. CSI. Engaging with Life Talk as a registered PBO with a BBBEE rating gives your learners opportunities to gain valuable CSI hours and experience. It also allows for schools to engage in CSI projects of their own.

THE LIFE TALK FORUM’S OBJECTIVES:

  1. Raise awareness and stimulate thought about challenges, choices, consequences and solutions.
  2. Change behaviour in certain instances, in the interest of creating a more stable and content society, steering away from distress-inducing lifestyles.
  3. Highlight solutions through solution-focused interventions.
  4. Galvanize society into taking action against challenges or activities that lead to heartachesuch as teen binge-drinking, drug abuse, promiscuity, crime, HIV/AIDS.
  5. Make values ‘cool’ and encourage our youth tomake wise choices and to take responsibility for their lives – thereby leading to a life that’s smoother, happier, successful and fulfilling.

The Life Talk Forum’s mission is to: raise awareness about the issues and challenges faced by teens; focus on solutions; trigger change where necessary; and to help create happy, successful and fulfilled youth guided by sound values.

Our Primary Goal:  to galvanize teens and parents to ‘pull’ together to address the various challenges.

HOW DOES THE FORUM WORK?

The Life Talk Forum is run by Izabella Little-Gates, author of the Life Talk books,  Directors Sally Thorp and the team.  Input comes from parents, teenagers, and a network of experts comprising: psychologists, counsellors, principals, teachers, career guidance specialists, experts in drug and alcohol abuse, and other expertise that may be required. Newsletters are produced regularly, summarizing the latest challenges that have come up and providing input from experts.

Talks and workshops are conducted for teens, educators and parents, and awareness building initiatives are run (such as the Life Talk Tug-of-War and Table Tuesdays described on the left tab).

Izabella and her team appear frequently on TV, radio and in the print media, and provide input on specific issues, challenges and helpful areas.  Life Talk works on many joint awareness-building initiatives with individuals and organisations that share our vision!

All advice given is given in good faith and the Life Talk Forum team and its advisors/panel members take no responsibility for any consequent actions arising therefrom.
